his
7 night / 8 day vacation has been designed as a holiday
adventure with the chance to do a little eco-learning thrown in!
It is perfect for families looking for a holiday together, where
they can combine periods of relaxation with lots of things to do
and a wide range of experiences to enjoy. It has also been
designed with both seniors and teenage children in mind, as well
as nature lovers, researchers and writers, and those considering
investment or relocation.
The 8 days will give you many chances to appreciate the
fascinating diversity of Belize: its habitats, eco-systems,
micro-climates, flora and fauna; and of course, the proud,
tolerant, warm and welcoming Belizeans themselves.
The
Orchid Garden Eco-Village
is a tranquil, secure and beautiful location 14.5 miles from
Belize City. From here you can explore the mystery and beauty
of Belize by tubing through a beautiful cave system and zip
lining through the tropical rainforest canopy. Or it may be
that you would prefer slightly more sedate activities, such as a
visit to a Butterfly Farm and a guided walk along a Rainforest
Natural Trail.
Another day will be spent taking a boat along the New River from
Orange Walk to Lamanai and exploring the magnificent Mayan ruins
there. This is a trip to suit the whole family, with plenty of
opportunities either to run around, explore and climb to the top
of Mayan pyramids, or simply to sit and marvel at the
achievements of the Ancient Maya, while watching others tackle
the more energetic options.
You must not miss your chance to visit the unique Belize Zoo,
and the proximity it offers to its fascinating collection of
rescued Belizean animals. You may find yourself photographing
not only the animals but also the idiosyncratic signs in rhyming
couplets.
Families with younger children will especially enjoy spending
some time at Old Belize, with its fascinating museum, its clean,
sandy beach and its impressive waterslide. There is something
here for everyone to enjoy. On this day, we encourage you to
take the public bus which stops in front of our restaurant every
half hour. The Zoo is only a 20 minute ride west, Old Belize a
15 minute ride east. This way you save a lot of dollars in tour
fees, as well as experiencing the Belizean way of doing things.
One of the highlights for the more active is our tour to Actun
Tunichil Muknal (ATM for short
“Cave of the
Stone Sepulcher”)
.
An
Expedition underground to find the Crystal Mayan Maiden,
this cave was
featured in the National Geographic Explorer film Journey through
the Underworld (1993).
You will bounce over some rough road to get to the start, then
trek through some steamy jungle for up to an hour, fording the
river 3 times (the water may be up to your knees, or even
higher) to get to the mouth of the cave. Then you swim into the
cave (or you may just walk through the water ) and make your way
past stalactites and stalagmites to crystallized human remains
from Mayan rituals which took place more than a thousand years
ago. This is an awesome trip which is arguably not for the
faint-hearted; which is why we run a more sedate option on the
same day! You may choose to spend time exploring Mayan,
Mennonite and Mestizo population centers with their different
cultural overtones instead.
You will enjoy one or two nights on Caye, from where you can take a trip
to swim with nursing sharks and gigantic rays, and snorkel over
the barrier reef at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Meals on the
Caye are not included in the package price; but food on the Caye
is cheap, and happy hour is often from 4pm "'til everybody
happy".
The final list of tour experiences will be tailored to your
specific requirements. Nobody will expect you to do anything
you don't want to do.
Joining our program
means paying less, and therefore getting great value. Relax
comfortably in our clean, spacious, air-conditioned rooms with
en suite bathrooms. Enjoy the advantages of staying in a
tranquil private village. Experience the lush beauty of the
tropics right outside your door. Try signature dishes from six
different cultures - Mayan, Mestizo, Mexican, Garifuna, Kriol
and Taiwanese; everyone says the food is one of the best things
about the Orchid Garden. Vegetarians are welcome, and well
catered for.
One of the most memorable parts of your trip will be the time
spent at our Eco-Village, and the 90 minute tour of its nature
trail, its museums full of natural wonders, and its interesting
examples of eco-sustainable practices.
