Preface:
Some twenty years ago, I wanted to promote the three notions, i.e., life-time learning, respect the difference of life and Eco-protection. At the time, I knew it is so but the reason why it is so was not recognized, that is, I knew the importance of these three notions but could not figure out why they are three only. After twenty years of meditation along with experiments and experiences, I figure out the philosophical background of these three notions.
Theoretically speaking, as soon as scientific technology advances and so does culture, presumably society becomes more harmonic and peaceful; on the contrary, it is not so, and instead crime rate climbs, war becomes incessant and terrorism rampant.
Human beings ,I think, have gone astray in some aspects. Having been thinking for so many years, I made a conclusion that if we put these three notions as starting point for education, we can improve the current world.
Ever since ancient times, there have been two arguments widely recognized and accepted by the people on earth; one is that sages and men of virtue acknowledge in this world the unique truth which the majority people of world believe as the only value in the world, the other is that people regard human evolution as the result of race competition.
In pursuit of the unique truth, philosophers divided themselves into two factions to argue with each other for a thousand years. One faction claims that life is mind-oriented, believing that mind controls everything with fleshy body and physical substances as its image or subordinate parts which do impede the development of mind. The other faction maintains that everything happens due to the interaction of substances or fleshy body; the activity of mind derives from action of human organs and mind is not independent.
My point of view is that life is a co-existing body; life cannot live without co-existence. Life is a co-existent body (physical substances and non-physical substances). The combination of the two makes up three co-existent relationships, that is, the physical category of co-existence makes up fleshy body, non-physical category of co-existence forms mind, and the co-existence of fleshy body and mind an individual.
The three categories of co-existent relationship lay the foundation for human existence and continuous development. Therefore, man must not be mind-oriented only, neither be substance-oriented only but be co-existence of mind and substance. There must be mutual respect between mind and substance for a balance. Then it comes about evolution as a result of co-existence, instead of competition, not to mention struggle.
Man has long regarded competition and struggle are the cause of evolution. For the sake of competition or struggle, he or she incessantly step up his or her attack on others, thus increasing discrimination and antagonism. The competition leads to vicious cycle of disorder and turmoil; no matter how many stipulations for it man has enacted, help is limited and small.
What we claim is that life is co-existence while co-existence is the main cause of evolution; competition is game whereas struggle is misunderstanding so that life stresses mutual respect as long as we are not offensive to others. Every individual can look for his or her own respected truth and value instead of coercing the other co-existence into accepting his or her own.
At the time of future generations, if every individual can cultivate his or her own life-long learning habit and capability and give full respect for other different individual as well as his culture, loving this earth on which we survive, then the world will move on in healthy cycle the more the better.
