For our first trip to Belize we chose Orchid Gardens because of the all-inclusive packages they offered and were not disappointed! What a great way to experience the mainland and Belizean history and culture. We spent 6 nights here and from the time we arrived, all we had to do was show up at the appointed time for breakfast, daily excursions and dinner. The staff took care of everything else! Alfredo is an excellent tour guide and driver. I highly recommend the tours for Lamanai Mayan Ruins and New River Cruise, Cave of the Crystal Maiden (take 2 pairs of thick socks for climbing on the rocks!), ziplining and cavetubing . The zoo is an excellent way to see a variety of native Belizean wildlife--most of the animals there were rescued. Skip visiting downtown Belize City (industrial port city) except to catch the water taxi to the cayes.
Christine and her staff were very attentive in making sure we had a good experience at the hotel. The air-conditioned guest rooms were large with basic furnishings and spotlessly cleaned every day; meals were freshly prepared and very good, a fusion of Belizean and Asian flavors. They even had a surprise birthday cake for me! Bring trail mix with you for snacks on your daytrips and try the 'spicy oranges' from the roadside stands, Marie's hot sauce on eggs, beans, rice, stewed chicken, and just about everything else, and the Belizean rum.
We would definitely return to Orchid Gardens for another Belizean adventure vacation.
