ATM (Crystal Maiden Cave; Underground Expedition)
The underground exploration of the Tomb of the Crystal Maiden at Aktun Tunichil Muknal is arguably not for the faint-hearted; but many people have said it was the best thing about their trip to Belize.
As long as the tour vehicle doesn't break down under the strain, you will stop only at a farm which is doubling as an archaeological station. To get to the mouth of the cave you walk for about 40 minutes You swim in - it's about thirty feet; non-swimmers can make it around the edge clinging to the guide's backpack - It is an awesome experience that we have seen seven year olds and seventy year olds relish: but you need to be fairly confident in water, not to mind tight squeezes in small places, and to have fairly good knees for the climbing bits. Oh yes, and not to be afraid of the dark.
Wildlife New River Cruise + Mayan CIty of Lamanai
This activity combines wetland wild-life watching with a trip back
more than a thousand years to a pinnacle of achievement in the long
history of the Ancient Maya: Lamanai. You will have a chance to climb
to the top of the tallest pyramid for breathtaking views above the
canopy.
Laman'ai is thought to be a corruption of Lama'an/ayin - Yucatecan for
submerged crocodile - and the city was continuously occupied for
almost three thousand years. Founded by or before 1500 BCE, Lamanai
somehow survived the decline that devastated most of the southern
lowland sites in the 9th and 10th centuries CE, maintaining its
political and religious structures and the level of its population.
Throughout the post-classic period the community continued to flourish
and remain active while most neighboring sites were abandoned and fell
into decay.
This is a wonderful day, of free movement over sparkling turquoise
water, cool magic in it and a blazing sun above it. Weather permitting
(and it nearly always does permit) you will have an experience to
remember wistfully long after you're home again, maybe with bitingly
wintry conditions outside, when you will fairly regularly wish you
could be back in those enticing Caribbean waters enjoying world class
snorkeling, a warm, welcoming climate and friendly laid-back people
telling you "dis jooel is fer evribadi."
Belize Zoo: a unique collection of rescued wild animals of Belize, this quirky zoological park rehabilitates injured or rogue creatures that would otherwise have died or been culled. Look out also for the hand painted enclosure signs in verse!.
This is a different kind of zoo.The humans are carefully controlled and escorted.Most animals are in their natural habitat.
The zoo tends to close early - around 4pm, and they will be waving you out at this time which is feeding time!

The "Zoo" presents a unique opportunity to get really close to many
wild animals of Belize that have grown used to the proximity of
humans. These are rescued and rehabilitated animals that could not
survive on their own in the wild, and it is a real privilege to be
able through the cost of admission to contribute a few much-needed
dollars towards their upkeep in this safe, well fed haven.
